The heart-stopping moments when Neil Armstrong took his first tentative steps onto another world are defining images of the 20th century: grainy, fuzzy, unforgettable. But just 37 years after Apollo 11, it is feared the magnetic tapes that recorded the first moon walk - beamed to the world via three tracking stations, including Parkes's famous "Dish" - have gone missing at NASA's Goddard Space Centre in Maryland.A desperate search has begun amid concerns the tapes will disintegrate to dust before they can be found. It is not widely known that the Apollo 11 television broadcast from the moon was a high-quality transmission, far sharper than the blurry version relayed instantly to the world on that July day in 1969.Among those battling to unscramble the mystery is John Sarkissian, a CSIRO scientist stationed at Parkes for a decade. "We are working on the assumption they still exist," Mr Sarkissian told the Herald."Your guess is a good as mine as to where they are."Mr Sarkissian began researching the role of Parkes in Apollo 11's mission in 1997, before the movie The Dish was made. However, when he later contacted NASA colleagues to ask about the tapes, they could not be found."People may have thought 'we have tapes of the moon walk, we don't need these'," said the scientist who hopes a new, intensive hunt will locate them.If they can be found, he proposes making digitalised copies to treat the world to a very different view of history.

But the searchers may be running out of time. The only known equipment on which the original analogue tapes can be decoded is at a Goddard centre set to close in October, raising fears that even if they are found before they deteriorate, copying them may be impossible."We want the public to see it the way the moon walk was meant to be seen," Mr Sarkissian said."There will only ever be one first moon walk."Originally stored at Goddard, the tapes were moved in 1970 to the US National Archives. No one knows why, but in 1984 about 700 boxes of space flight tapes there were returned to Goddard.

Maybe Michael Jackson has them where he can claim to have done the original moon walk. :pinch:

***I am not volunteering to frisk Michael Jackson either*** :yucky:

That would be a pretty big loss, had we actually walked on the moon smile.gif

It's rather convenient that they've lost the tapes.

OMGoodness , dont honestly tell me that you think the moon walk was actually filmed in the studios in Hollywood?
Not everything in life is a conspiracy.
Some things are actually possible......an example of that would be paranormal research and capture on film of unexplained phenom.
We ask others to open their minds to the possiblity of such events yet we are so willing to believe that man didnt walk on the moon.
I will go with saying they did until i have hard evidence they didnt.

Nah Im not saying that lol I dont know and arent really worried where it was filmed - my concerns come from another quarter.

Why cant they do it again? Surely if 'foam chips' put the fear of God into people on launchday nowadays - there would have been much bigger problems to overcome back then? General consensus is that technology is increasing - not decreasing. And its not a financial thing, as the moon is a heck of a lot closer than mars and would be cheaper to get to than sending probe after probe out into the expanses of space - not even knowing if it will reach its target. And why arent other countries doing it now? Surely the technology would have filtered through after 30+ years? Unless, it just cant be done.

I had a very very very  close friend from New Orleans who's father had worked on that space mission. He swore up and down and sideways and back and forward that man did reach the moon. But has no explanation why it hasnt happened again.

There is no explanation why it hasnt happened again that can make me believe it has happened.

Maybe it's just a matter of funding. There isn't the instigation of the Russians getting there first, and the economy hasn't been as robust as it was then for a long time.

Different administrations have had different priorities too.

OK WWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOWWWWW

I had never heard that the moon landing was a fake, but after viewing those sights and looking at some of the "evidence" I really have to wonder!!!

I remember watching that with my Dad!!! Will have to run this by him.

I guess I would not be surprised. The goverment is not exactly filled with honest people!!!

I don't believe they (or anybody else) has walked on the moon to this very day. NASA would never have taken a chance of a failure with 30 billion dollars at stake, especially considering the low level of technology they had at that time.
