Lots of damage is reported in the city of Christchurch and there are power outages throughout the region. The earthquake happened at 4:35am local time and was felt on both islands.

Here are some local news links:

I didnt feel it.....although people just north of Wellington say they did. I am just outside Palmerston North.....so a long way from the epicentre. I do have an uncle and counsin in Christchurch, but Im sure they are fine....no one was killed thank goodness.

Earthquakes have been getting shallower and shallower here. A 4 pointer was felt here an afternoon a couple of weeks ago, centered just south of Wanganui. I didnt even feel that one.

Yeah we are all fine. Bad weather expected down there for the next few days unfortunately, high winds and up to 150mm rain. Not good.

Wow that's 5.9 inches of rain! We would build an ark around here for that kind of rain lol.

Oh we had a LOT of rain here today....I came home from work for a couple of hours in the middle of the day because I was worried about our water pump among other things (we have sewerage and water tanks in the ground). Had 4 inches of water I had to walk through to open the gate and get down the drive. The drain at the front of the house was overflowing and coming across the lawn, water was also coming in from the paddock next door across the lawn.

I have never seen so much water and so fast! The rain eased off here this afternoon, but the river 100 meters down the road is still rising at the moment. But so far so good :)

Thanks guys. The water issue has calmed down around where I am so thats a good thing.

Down south most schools have opened although theres still a lot more assessing of earthquake damaged buildings to go. They are trying to decide which of the heritage buildings need to be completely demolished and which they can save.

Still many people who cant go home at all. And still having aftershocks of course. It was pretty quiet for a couple of days and then this morning they had another 4.3.

My uncle and cousin are fine, their home was barely affected at all so that was our good news. My other uncle and aunt who live in the Hawkes bay that had the couple of earthquakes that were felt in my town are also ok. *touch wood*

All seems to be being dealt with well.
