Last night I noticed the birds, robins and sparrows mostly, were chirping in the middle of the night several hours before dawn. I have never encountered this before, so I looked it up online. While this has been noted in other places, there seems to be no specific reason for this. It went on for a very long time. I fell asleep and they were still going crazy which reminds that it was louder and more intense than normal. If we have an earthquake in the next few days I'll have my answer.

All I could think of was mating ?

I have considered mating season, and it may well be the answer, but I've never noticed it before. There are no new lights in the neighborhood either.

What about young birds just being immature? Could that have something to do with too?

It could be young ones AS. It hasn't happened since that one night, if that means anything.

Bids chirp at night. I've heard them while out camping and around home.
It can be due to something getting to close to them at night, the street lamps being on, or a particularly bright moon.

I'm leaning in the direction of a stray cat now as the likely answer.

Grew up in the woods...

chirping (peep peep, chirp actually kinda noisy) starts around 2-3 am... HOURS before sunrise.

It's a normal part of bird behavior, don't know why.
BUT according to legend the sun needs the birds to sing so it'll get up in
time to start the day. :D

Too funny , I was still up and awake at 4:30 this am . The kids windows were open and I could hear the Birds.
At first is was so loud and rhythmic , I thought it was an alarm car/home going off , but going dead ?
It was just that pattern Trin ~ Peep peep, chirp peep peep , chirp over and over and over and over.
Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah I wanted to send my cat out LOL she is like a small dog anyhow !
Give Them Something To peep peep , chirp at !
