I thought I'd post this here as well as U-M.

A magnitude 7 earthquake struck the nation of Haiti today, with the epicenter being about ten kilometers or six miles from the capital city of Port-Au-Prince, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. A tsunami warning was issued following the quake, but it was canceled. There have been at least eleven aftershocks ranging from 4.5-5.9 on the Richter Scale. Haiti, which has a population of nine million, is the poorest country in the western hemisphere and nearly one in five persons live in the vicinity of the capital. Several news websites are reporting that a hospital in the city has collapsed with people inside it.

The New York Times has more information and photos of the damage. News will be slow coming out of there so we won't know the death toll for some time I'm afraid.

This is so sad , I hope Haiti can come back from this terrible tragedy. Everyone is so poor already and now really have nothing. I have a feeling many people will die , so many
are still buried under the rubble.

Everyone is in my thoughts , and hoping for the best to come of this. Supposedly Obama is on it .

Yes it is very sad. I made a donation to the Red Cross for Haiti. There are no solid numbers yet, but the government there estimates the death toll of up to 50,000.

Oops I went back and corrected the number I typed. That is equal to the population of the town I was born in.

As bad as the tragedy is, I've seen a number of people claim that it's due to the population not being predominantly Christian.
Taking aside voodoo is related to Christianity, people like this sicken me.
Note, I'm not talking about Christians themselves, just these few who state things like that.

Thats right, blame a religion for a totally natural ocurrence. Human stupidity astounds me sometimes.

We have earthquakes everyday here, none of them are down to religion lol

The death toll is simply down to timing of the quake, resources used in building and the unpreparedness of the population....I dont think there's been all that many big quakes in Haiti - so, being as its a poor country none of those reasons surprise me.

Its just a shame that due to government (insert here whichever you want: greed, stupidity, unpreparedness) and the ruins of infrastructure that very little if any aid is getting through to most places that need it.

According to the Haitian government the confirmed death toll is now over 70,000 and rising. There was a major aftershock today of 6 on the Richter scale.

Aparently its not religion afterall, its you naughty Americans testing a new weapon....

Quote

Chavez says US 'weapon' caused Haiti quake

Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez Wednesday accused the United States of causing the destruction in Haiti by testing a 'tectonic weapon' to induce the catastrophic earthquake that hit the country last week.

President Chavez said the US was "playing God" by testing devices capable of creating eco-type catastrophes, the Spanish newspaper ABC quoted him as saying......
