A magnitude 7 earthquake struck the nation of Haiti today, with the epicenter being about ten kilometers or six miles from the capital city of Port-Au-Prince, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. A tsunami warning was issued following the quake, but it was canceled. There have been at least eleven aftershocks ranging from 4.5-5.9 on the Richter Scale. Haiti, which has a population of nine million, is the poorest country in the western hemisphere and nearly one in five persons live in the vicinity of the capital. Several news websites are reporting that a hospital in the city has collapsed with people inside it.
The New York Times has more information and photos of the damage. News will be slow coming out of there so we won't know the death toll for some time I'm afraid.

Taking aside voodoo is related to Christianity, people like this sicken me.

We have earthquakes everyday here, none of them are down to religion lol
The death toll is simply down to timing of the quake, resources used in building and the unpreparedness of the population....I dont think there's been all that many big quakes in Haiti - so, being as its a poor country none of those reasons surprise me.
Its just a shame that due to government (insert here whichever you want: greed, stupidity, unpreparedness) and the ruins of infrastructure that very little if any aid is getting through to most places that need it.

President Chavez said the US was "playing God" by testing devices capable of creating eco-type catastrophes, the Spanish newspaper ABC quoted him as saying......
