On the big island (Hawaii) there are legends of the Menehunees that live in the lava flows, and make walls and stacks of lava rocks. On one occasion one of the marines lifted a lava rock from the impact area (Poakuloa) He actualy slept with the rock under his pillow. Later that night he came to me requesting permission to take a jeep out to return the rock where it was found. Since this episode was causing quite a ruckus I told him to take the rock back so we could all get some sleep. Another simular legeng is that on moonlit nights this Queen Pele will stop people and demand pork meat in order to pass. In 4 years I never saw a menehunee or Queen Pele.
