Tuatha de Danan means "Children of Danu" or Children of the Goddess Danu and it is from their legend that Tolkien created the Elves in the Lord of the Rings. I do not believe things were sacrificed to these beings, rather, they are considered "earth spirits" falling into the category of things that were never in a physical human form. The Children of Danu were said to have departed in great ships...much like the Elves who left middle Earth in Tolkien's tale.
